## The Black Streaks on Your Roof Are Alive
Gloeocapsa Magma — a cyanobacteria — is responsible for the black streaks you see on asphalt shingle roofs throughout Spring TX and The Woodlands. It’s not dirt or water staining. It’s a living organism feeding on the limestone filler in your shingles.
## Why Houston Roofs Get Affected Faster
The bacteria requires humidity and warmth to thrive. Houston’s combination of subtropical humidity and year-round mild temperatures is essentially ideal growing conditions. Most roofs in our area develop visible streaking within 3-5 years of installation.
## The Danger Beyond Appearance
Gloeocapsa Magma’s feeding process removes shingle granules. Those granules are your roof’s UV protection and fire resistance layer. Streaked roofs age significantly faster than clean ones — and most roofing manufacturers exclude algae damage from warranty coverage.
## Why Pressure Washing Makes It Worse
Blasting the streaks with high pressure displaces the bacteria temporarily and removes granules in the process — the worst possible outcome. The bacteria returns within weeks because the root structure was never killed.
## How Soft Washing Works
Low-concentration sodium hypochlorite solution penetrates the bacterial colony and kills it at the cellular level. Combined with a surfactant to help penetration and rinsed at minimal pressure, the result is a fully clean roof that stays cleaner much longer.
